thorn/fibre needles record preference question

Post by rgodridge » Sun Aug 27, 2017 9:20 pm

Those of you who use thorn or cactus needles, what records do you think they sound best on?
I've read a lot about people using them on orchestral records, but for me it slitely muddies up the sound and I think they're best on 20s and early 30s jazz in good condition, or acoustically recorded stuff opera especially.
am I picking the wrong records or do some of you agree?

"As is well known in 78 collecting circles, Thorn and Cactus cause little wear but tend to clog up the grooves which dulls the sound and attracts mould. Steel needles also embed bits in the groove and cause degradation.
For record preservation and extracting maximum information, Diamonds are the way to go:-

A simple and effective 78 cleaning method that I've been using for years is described here:-

Happy listening. " Found elsewhere first link seems inactive but youtube is from someone called Norman Field

Norman's also a decent jazz musician I've heard! He seems alright, it's not his falt he's a brummy. A good friend of mine is and I tease him that it's the most boring accent ever...

Good point about whatever you use clogging up records. If I could use a diamond on my gramophone I would, ta Mic
